I have installed the Testdisk program and it will be useful in the future I am sure. Turns out that the problem was a hardware failure of the USB stick and no recovery or reuse is possible. There is a Linux app called TestDisk that is a powerful utility for retrieving files and partitions that would otherwise be unrecoverable.? It runs from the command line, but if you follow the online instructions it should be within your grasp.?
