   Thanks.  I'll go for it.  For $ 200.00, I can buy it, add 1 GB of RAM, and upgrade the HDD.  Just hope I can coax a few more months out of the original battery (Dell wants $ 135.00 for replacement).
 
   Maybe some kind soul will share a good source for reliable aftermarket batteries.  Has there been any decision about where we will meet on 6 Oct.??

I am running Ubuntu 7.x on a D630.

It works pretty good.

The sound and video you mention seems fine.

Ubuntu took about 1 hour to get up and running on my dell.

Dells are pretty popular laptop and the components you mention sound
pretty generic.
