- Jimmy shared his experience starting with Linux in 2000 (Red Hat 5):
- Previously used Sun Systems at College Park for homework.
- Linux felt like winning the lottery, providing a “million-dollar tool” for free.
- Enabled him to compile and experiment with code from home.
Historical Computing Experiences
- Bob mentioned using Fortran with punch cards.
- Side discussion on old VAX systems and early centralized computing infrastructure.
Linux Distributions
- Jimmy: Long-term Gentoo user (since ~2005).
- Bob: Prefers Linux Mint.
