I am running Ubuntu 7.x on a D630.

It works pretty good.

The sound and video you mention seems fine.

Ubuntu took about 1 hour to get up and running on my dell.

Dells are pretty popular laptop and the components you mention sound
pretty generic.

After bringing a desktop to two LUG meetings, I know it is a masochistic exercise :--{)? I am not looking for a high-end or gaming laptop, just a more portable learning tool.
